Creative Solutions To Minimize Your Kids’ Screen Time

It’s summer time and while kids have been waiting for the time off from school, now that it’s here, you may hear these complaints: “I’m bored,”  “It’s Hot outside,” or “I don’t know what to do.” Does that sound like your child “enjoying” the summer vacation? They say you have to choose your battles. “I admit it, at the end of the hectic day especially during the LONG summer days, I will just give my child the cell phone or the ipad to just give me peace, ” admits one mom. It can be difficult to find creative solutions to minimize that screen time.  And why shouldn’t you let them spend time with their social media “friends” before they drive you crazy?

Screen Dangers

Spending too much time in front of those big and small screens could actually endanger your child’s health.  Opticians warn that the overuse of phones and other devices like computers, tablets, and flat screen TVs could lead to eye damage. Furthermore, watching too much TV or just playing video games can also lead to weight gain due to lack of exercise.  Too much time browsing social media platforms could even make your child unhappy.  A survey conducted by the Royal Society for Public Health in the UK found that Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram all led to increased feelings of depression, anxiety, poor body image and loneliness. How About Some Arts And Crafts

Arts and crafts are one idea to get your child away from those screens. Try to get them involved in making jewelry. A  friendship bracelet with beads, for example, gets them closer to their real friends and lets them be creative. You would not need much to get started just some strings, leathers, or yarns and some beads in different colors. Your creative child will do the rest.
